DMA Talent Marketing Challenge 2020 FAQs

Q. How does the ongoing COVID-19 situation affect the Challenge deadlines and timeframes?

A. The deadline for submissions will remain as 12 April.

The finalists’ pitch date will remain as 7 May for the time being. As the situation develops, we may need to push the date back and will communicate this via the DMA Talent website, here: https://dma.org.uk/talent/dma-talent-marketing-challenge. And via our social channels; Twitter @DMATalent; Instragram @dma_talent.

The campaign dates of 1-30 June 2020 may also be moved back for the same reason. If so, it will be moved to a later month, at a time deemed appropriate by DMA Talent, StudentUniverse and Tourism NT before 30 June 2021.

.
Q. Should COVID-19 affect our submissions and campaign strategy?

For those teams who have not yet completed, or almost completed their submissions, please do not let the current Coronavirus situation distract you from the original brief. The FCO is currently advising against all non-essential international travel and Australia have an obligatory 14-day isolation requirement for all arrivals. Furthermore, as of 20 March, Australia will be closing its borders completely to non-residents.

However, these restrictions will be lifted at some point in the future and, when that happens, we believe there will be significant uptake in international travel. StudentUniverse and Tourism NT need to be well positioned with a strong campaign at that time to ensure the Northern Territory is front of mind for young travellers.

.

Q. Me and my teammates cannot meet to film our 3-minute (max.) video. What should we do?

Your video does not have to feature all, or any of you, in it. The video can be an animation (or combination of animation and film).

Here’s an example of a finalist pitch from last year’s Marketing Challenge, in response to a brief from Instagram, that’s purely animation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3a7uNoCt9mE

And remember, it’s not all about how the video looks; the content is the most important bit. Your video/animated presentation should summarise your “big idea” concisely and clearly, inviting the client to want to look more deeply into your campaign and read your five-page document.

.
Q. Why is June such a key booking time for Tourism NT?

A. This booking period is relevant to the ‘youth’ segment as many students finish the year or leave University in May. We are keen to be in their consideration set when they begin to think about travelling and potentially working.

.

Q. What are the top three types of jobs that working holiday makers do in the NT?

A. Hospitality & tourism, farm or station work, and construction mainly and this will depend on the time of year.

.

Q. What are the current top three destinations for visitors to the NT?

A. Uluru (Ayers Rock), our tropical capital city Darwin and the pretty town of Alice Springs. All of them are quick and easy to get to from other parts of Australia

.

Q. Do you get repeat visitors to the NT?

A. Yes we do but they tend to be older travellers rather than youth. First time visitors tend to visit the Red Centre and the icons of Uluru and Kata Tjuta, whilst second or third time visitors wat to visit the Top End Nation al Parks like Kakadu and visit our tropical capital city, Darwin.

.
Q. Do we need to consider recent the bushfires in Australia?

A. Statement from Tourism NT on 12 February 2020:

"The Northern Territory has been very fortunate to have remained largely unaffected by the bushfires and we’re thankful that our tourism products and experiences right across the Territory are open for business and operating totally normally. Therefore, the bushfires should not influence your marketing plans in any way.”
