7 Top tips to consider for a sustainable print campaign

When planning a sustainable print campaign, it is important to consider multiple factors alongside sustainability. Typically, there are other goals in mind such as response rates, brand awareness or CPA. It is possible to focus on these goals whilst being as sustainable as possible and keeping costs in mind.

Choosing to print the campaign with B corporations, fully sustainable printers that use electric vehicles for transport, solar-powered and renewable energy to run factories, and harvest rainwater for flushing water and recycle 100% of paper waste should be opted for. However, this may limit you on format and volumes that can be produced, as no manufacturer has the machinery to produce everything in-house. Generally, printers specialize in certain areas such as low volume digital print or high run, or simple leaflet formats for quick turnaround costs.

To adopt sustainability in your print campaigns without hindering the overall goal and purpose, we would recommend considering the following guidelines:

  1. Work with a printer that carbon offsets all paper purchased, ensuring anything taken is replenished.
  2. Make sure the printer is ISO27001 accredited, and always opt for a printer that is for maximum MIS security to avoid wastage.
  3. Consider the type of ink; opt for a vegetable-based ink.
  4. Use recycled paper or paper from sustainably managed forests, look for certifications such as FSC or PEFC.
  5. Opt for a QR code instead of BRE if appropriate for the audience.
  6. Work with a printer that is part of Ecologi, helping to create a zero net carbon structure.
  7. Encourage recipients to recycle the materials after use and provide clear instructions on how to do so.

Alternatively, work with an agency that is B Corp and follows these guidelines to ensure every campaign is as sustainable as possible. By focusing on sustainable practices from production to delivery, your print campaign can achieve its objectives without compromising on environmental responsibilities.
