Data is currently a very hot topic in the world of marketing, especially with the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) coming into force on the 25th May. Within the marketing sector, there is currently a massive skills shortage in data specific roles.

Here are 10 interesting facts to get you excited about data-related roles:

1. In 2017, data overtook oil to become the world’s most valuable resource.

2. Every second we create new data. On average, around 6,000 tweets are posted which corresponds to over 350,000 tweets sent per minute, 500 million tweets per day and around 200 billion tweets per year!

3. Google processes on average over 40,000 search queries every second, which translates to over 3.5 billion searches per day and 1.2 trillion searches per year worldwide.

4. Facebook users send on average 31.25 million messages and view 2.77 million videos every minute with 100 terabytes of data being uploaded daily.

5. Every minute, up to 300 hours of video is uploaded to YouTube.

6. Data volumes are exploding! More data has been created in the past few years than in the entire previous history of the human race.

7. As data grows faster than ever before, by the year 2020, about 1.7 megabytes of new information will be created every second for every human on the planet!

8. This tsunami of data could consume one fifth of global electricity by 2025! Now that’s a clear representation of the amount of data out there!

9. The data industry is facing a massive skills gap with Europe needing 346,000 more data scientists by 2020! In the European Commission’s report published in 2015, it was stated that up to 77% of such jobs remained unfilled and it thinks the problem is going to get worse with a 160% increase in demand between 2013 and 2020.

10. This may explain why currently only 1% of all data is ever analysed and used! Just imagine the insights marketers could gain if they were able to analyse just double the amount they do now!

Data is the world's most valuable resource and is one of the globe’s fastest growing industries. With the current skills gap the industry is facing, businesses are struggling to find people with the skills required to effectively collect, analyse and present their data.

That’s why we’ve created Creative Data. The programme gives people aspiring to enter into the data and marketing industry the skills and connections they need to do so. Click here to find out more and to apply – Applications close 31st January.
