PAF, the UK's most complete and up to date addressing database

Royal Mail’s Address Management Unit (AMU) is responsible for the management, maintenance and supply of Royal Mail's address datasets; most notably the Postcode Address File (PAF), Multiple Residence, Not Yet Built and British Forces Post Office Postcode Data. Our PAF database brings together more than 29 million addresses and all 1.8 million UK Postcodes into a single file.

Maintaining the accuracy of so many address records is a challenge, luckily, with Royal Mail’s 60,000 postmen and woman walking every street in the UK, six days a week, they are in a unique position to report details of address changes. This can be anything from a change to a business name, details of demolished or derelict properties, or by confirming when a newly built property can receive mail. Their presence across the UK is invaluable in maintaining the accuracy and integrity of our data assets. The changes they report enable us to make between 4,000 – 5,000 changes to PAF every day. We also work closely with every UK Local Authority on assigning an address and Postcode to properties that are under construction and incorporate this information first into Not Yet Built before transferring to PAF once the address can accept mail.

PAF data is a key component in many address management solutions developed by independent, licensed Solutions Providers. The solutions they create are used by around 40,000 organisations in the UK in a range of innovative ways; from making e-commerce transactions easier, managing databases, validating customer identities and in planning and resource allocation. The highly accurate postal address and postcode information in PAF enables organisations to deliver a slick and professional service to their customers, increase online sales conversions and reduce the risk of fraud.

Visitors to our website can choose to find out more about PAF and how it’s used, read case studies from existing customers, or decide whether to connect with a Solutions Provider or, if they have the capability to programme, download sample data for themselves.

The Address Management Unit is proud to be the first unit within Royal Mail to achieve the highly sought after Investors in People Gold award. In addition, following a recent independent audit, the Address Management Unit met the required standards and retained the DMA's Dataseal accreditation once more.
