The DPN Rosemary Smith Award for Responsible Marketing

Entries for the Rosemary Smith Award, supported by the DMA and DM Trust, are now open to professionals in marketing, privacy, and data protection.

Named after the Co-Founder of the Data Protection Network (DPN), Rosemary Smith made a significant contribution to the marketing and data industry as an influencer, thought leader, and inspirational mentor to many. The words ‘Responsible Marketing’ echoed in all of her advice and guidance.

The award, which launched last year and is free to enter, gives recognition to an individual or team for a creative and privacy aware project or initiative.

The judging panel will look for those who have:

  • Embraced ‘Privacy by Design’ – considered their customers’ privacy needs from the start when creating a new workflow or investing in new technology

  • Put customers at the heart of their campaigns – communicated to their customers with respect, openness, transparency, and jargon-free language

  • Encouraged the support of their organisation – decided a shared view across all teams where the balance lies between risk and reward

  • The ability to measure the impact of their project – demonstrated a clear strategy about how to recruit and retain customers

Winners will receive £1,000 and a trophy. All entrants are eligible for a discount on training at the Institute of Data & Marketing (IDM).

Short-listed entrants will be invited to participate in a discussion on Responsible Marketing and Privacy by Design at the 2021 DMA Data Conference.

Key dates:

  • Entries close: Friday 18 December 2020

  • Judging: January/February 2021

  • Presentation: TBC

Last year’s winners: Andrew Hiskett & Paula Welsh, Keech Hospice Care.

Runners up: Kristof Ruisz & Marita Jauce, Emirates Group, & Scott Joslin, WarnerMedia (working with DQM GRC).

Tip: There are few teams who have used video or graphics to bring their privacy policies to life – Channel 4, The Guardian, Amnesty International, and the ICO have materials that explain their policies clearly.

We encourage everyone who has worked on a data privacy project to enter.
