German Chancellor Angela Merkel discusses the vital role of data in the European economy
17 Sep 2015
The German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, has spoken out over the European Data Protection Regulation claiming that the legislation should not be overly restrictive lest it hold back economic growth in Europe.
She described data as the “raw material” of the future and believes that it is fundamental to the digital single market. Consumer data will increasingly drive growth in Europe, with added value no longer primarily generated by the manufacturing of a product but through the effective use of data.
She said, “If we do not establish relations to customers properly then a substantial part of the added value will be lost”
Angela Merkel appealed to the European Parliament to take a business perspective and not simply view the regulation from a data protection standpoint. Merkel wants to see the legislation work to encourage economic growth, protect citizenry and act as a framework for data harmonisation across Europe.
It is great to see the German Chancellor speaking out and providing a pro-business viewpoint. Germany has one of the most restrictive data protection regimes in Europe and so her remarks may influence thinking in the EU Parliament.
Hopefully, more European leaders will begin to speak up and show their support for regulation that protects consumers and helps business to flourish.
