What is day-to-day life like as a Junior Designer, what are the main responsibilities, and what skills do you need to excel?

We chatted to Stephen Cooper, who is currently a Junior Designer at Frame, to find out what day-to-day life is like in his role.

Role Profile

As a Junior Designer, you'll be expected to work with senior creative staff on a range of ambitious and innovative projects - therefore you must be ready to develop your skill set. You'll be responsible for supporting the creative direction of campaigns, have good knowledge of typography, layout, animation and art direction in the effort of helping the team produce the best work possible. Communication is a big part of the job, therefore you must feel confident enough to contribute to the entire creative process. Being aware of current trends is also key when moving towards promotion and recognition.

Key responsibilites

- Meeting clients or account managers to communicate the business objectives and requirements of the campaign

- Providing quotes for clients and estimating how long will be required to complete a project

- Creating design briefs that suit the client's purpose

- Producing new plans and concepts and developing interactive designs

- Presenting concepts and finalised ideas to different clients or account managers

- Working with a range of media, including computer-aided design, as well as being aware of the latest emerging technologies

- Proof reading in order produce high-quality work that is accurate and meets editorial standards

- Conveying illustrative skills with rough sketches and working on layouts that are ready for print

- Commissioning illustrators and photographers

- Working on projects with illustrators, printers, designers, copywriters, photographers, stylists, other designers, web developers, account executives and marketing specialists.

Requirements

Strong written and verbal communication skills

Adeptness with leading design software packages

Have the ability to work in a high pressure and time constrained environment therefore very good organisational skills are required to meet deadlines

A background of working as part of a design team and the willingness to listen to feedback and use it to improve

The ability to see projects through from inception to production and deliver with consistency regardless of project size
