Thinking about applying for the Creative Data Academy?

Tesni Filzek, who is in her final year at the University of Birmingham studying Biochemistry, got a summer placement at Human Theory after meeting CEO and Founder Andrew Webber at London’s Academy last year.

We caught up with her and Andrew to find out how her placement came about and how it went.

I met Andrew at the Creative Data Academy 2019 in London. His company, Human Theory, an insight agency based in London, ran an amazing workshop on segmentation. Afterwards, they offered their support on our group projects. Our project brief was to use data to improve customer loyalty for the popular brand, Ralph Lauren. He gave us some suggestions in line with our ideas and explained how they deal with client data when working on their own projects. As a Biochemistry student, I was especially interested in the strategies they used in interpreting data and how important displaying your data is in communicating it back to your clients.

Later that day, we attended a networking event where all the attendees of the Academy had the opportunity to speak to many different people within the industry. Here, I got the opportunity to speak to Andrew further and we discussed the roles of data strategists and data scientists, two job titles I had never considered while studying at University.

We connected on LinkedIn and we met up during my Easter holidays to discuss the possibility of joining the agency as a summer intern. We decided I would work as part of their team for 8 weeks and would have the opportunity to work across all areas of the company to get the best understanding of the various roles.

I worked on real client projects within the strategy and data science teams, as well as having the opportunity to help with their marketing. The most exciting part was working on my own end to end project and presenting it back to the team, combining everything they had taught me. I cannot thank Andrew and everyone at the Creative Data Academy enough.

Working for Human Theory was not only enjoyable but has given me a better understanding and appreciation for how useful data can be, as well as giving me a direction for the next step in my career.

I would 100% recommend attending the Creative Data Academy to anyone who is even remotely interested in a career within data. I promise its far more interesting than it initially sounds.

At Human Theory, we pride ourselves on thinking creatively about the use of data, and how it can, in turn, influence creative thinking. Finding talent with the ability and mindset to balance both the subjective and the objective is an ongoing challenge for us, and the Creative Data Academy, as with all the DMA Talent initiatives, has always proved to be a great place to meet new talent. As a result, we were delighted to run a session at the 2019 Creative Data Academy in London.

Tesni immediately stood out during the day, as someone who had quickly grasped the different ways data could be applied for businesses, as well as showing confidence and leadership within her group.

We kept in contact after the day and were delighted that she joined us over the summer holidays, to help out on all sides of the business and learn about the various roles within the team.

Tesni contributed hugely during the eight weeks that she was with us and became a valuable member of the team. It's always a privilege to work with bright, young talent, like Tesni, and we're very much looking forward to helping out at the next Creative Data Academy.
