On the 20th of February, a group of aspiring marketers from universities in the West of England and Wales descended on Zone Digital’s Bristol office to get a taste of what working on a marketing brief is really like.

Get a glimpse of what happened at the event in our short video by clicking here.

Julie Atherton, Founder & Managing Director of Small Wonder, chaired the evening which saw the students brainstorm ways to encourage people in the UK to choose a vegan diet, with the fight against climate change as the motivation.

To set the scene and provide some insight on the topic, Earthling Ed, a vegan educator and public speaker, got the evening underway with an inspiring talk about the impact meat consumption is having on the environment and how eating less will reduce carbon emissions.

Paul Handley, CEO and Strategy Partner at Cheltenham-based agency Campfire Marketing was on hand to deliver the brief and gave some key recommendations on what to consider from a behavioural science point of view.

The students worked in small teams to tackle the challenge and each team was given an audience person to target. We were joined by a whole host of marketing industry experts from local businesses – including Different Kettle, Proctor + Stevenson and Riggs & Razdan - who offered advice and guidance on their ideas:

After an hour of brainstorming and putting their ideas to paper, each team took it in turns to pitch to the panel of experts, with just two minutes on the clock. While the judges deliberated on who gave the best pitch, Tara Adana Peters, who attended Fresh Blood in 2017 and is now Account Manager at Spindogs, shared her career journey and how she secured a job as a direct result of attending – and stressed the importance of networking with all the professionals that were there.

The winning team were announced, and each awarded with a vegan chocolate hamper to make the win that little bit sweeter. The evening ended with a networking session, which gave the students the chance to talk to all the marketing professionals and make those all-important connections.

Here’s what a couple of attendees had to say about the event:

Ben Clements

A brilliant way to meet professionals and peers within the industry and local area. This was the first event I have attended, and it wasn't a topic I thought particularly suited my interests, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was a great set up and I would recommend attending future events organised by DMA Talent.

Phoebe Michaelides

This was an excellent event for first time networking, even for people from backgrounds other than marketing. The DMA was accommodating and open which created space for natural conversation to flow easily. A valuable opportunity which I urge fellow students to attend.
