How the UK will spend online in 2015
07 May 2015
Since 2011, online expenditure has risen year-on-year across the board. But why exactly is this? Are brands making their online stores easier to access? Has the high street reached its expiry date? Or does this wave of online spending stem from something else?
The reason why spend trends have shifted so much lies in both our changing demographics and the constant advances in technology. The big spenders in online retail might not be who you’d expect: those over 55, and those under 35.
A change in the silver surfer’s habits – they’re now accessing the web on mobiles and tablets – is one clear reason why spending has increased. Meanwhile, Generation Y is finding that innovative multi-channel retail fits their on-the-go lifestyle perfectly, allowing them to spend more easily and very much at their convenience.
So is this trend set to continue? All signs point to a resounding ‘yes’. Given current trends, early forecasts are already showing on-going growth in online sales, and there are suggestions that the average online order size is set to increase with it. It seems 2015 will be an affluent year for e-commerce, so start thinking about how to adjust your marketing plan to capitalise on these trends.
