The Government has confirmed what the DMA has been emphasising to members for some time and that is that the GDPR will still apply in May 2018 as the UK will not have left the EU.

Secretary of State Karen Bradley MP used her appearance during a Culture, Media and Sports Select Committee to say: “We will be members of the EU in 2018 and therefore it would be expected and quite normal for us to opt into the GDPR and then look later at how best we might be able to help British business with data protection while maintaining high levels of protection for members of the public.

Organisations should have already been investing in making the necessary changes on the road to GDPR compliance. However, for those that maybe thought GDPR might go away, we now have ministerial confirmation that GDPR will apply in the UK from May 2018. Brexit does not change that.
