DMA and members respond to EU PECR reform
08 Jul 2016
The EU ePrivacy Directive is the piece of legislation that informs the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR).
We thank all DMA members who submitted comments to assist in our response to the EU Commission’s public consultation into the review of the ePrivacy Directive, which has now concluded. You can read through the DMA’s response here.
The ePrivacy Directive gives consumers specific rights over electronic communications. For example, the Directive leaves it up to member states to decide whether an opt-in or out consent is appropriate for telemarketing. The UK uses the opt-out model and but other countries do not.
Measures like the UK’s telemarketing opt-out and rules for marketing on social media will be reformed in this review.
We will keep members updated as this legislation passes though Brussels. The DMA will also continue to lobby EU, in spite of the Brexit vote, to ensure that members’ voices and those of the wider one-to-one industry are represented.
