Data Protection Bill becomes law
23 May 2018
After several weeks of ‘ping-pong’ between the Houses of Lords and Commons, the Data Protection Bill has passed the final vote and will receive Royal Ascent tomorrow.
There were fears that the Bill would not be passed in time for the GDPR deadline, which could have caused some administrative pains.
The Bill will ensure continuity with EU data laws after Brexit by translating GDPR into UK law. The Data Protection Bill also makes legal distinctions in the parts of GDPR which allow national governments to decide a particular threshold. For example, in the UK, children will be classed as those above the age of 13.
