Act now: write to your MEP

TOP TIPS FOR LOBBYING YOUR MEP

The DMA has been lobbying intensively since this process began in 2010 – and now is the perfect time for you to lend your voice to the campaign.

Writing to your MEP is the best way for you, and thousands of other UK businesses, to make yourself heard in this debate.

It needn't take long and it needn't be complicated, but it could just be the most important 20 minutes you'll invest in your livelihood this year.

Stand up for your business in 4½ easy steps:

1. Multiple MEPs represent your region, and each one has a say. You only need to write one letter – but please send a personally addressed copy to each MEP.

Find your MEPs' contact details here

2. Template letters carry little weight: we need you to send them a personal letter with your personal concerns.

Tell them who you are, where you're based, what your business does, how many people it employs and the approximate value of your business and its contribution to the local economy.

3. State your business view: how much your business relies on customers' data and what your prospects would be like if it was taken away tomorrow.

4. Sum up by asking them to fight for the fair interests of business.

4½. If you can visit your MEP(s) in person, this carries even more weight. You're defending your livelihood and those of your employees, and explaining your concerns in person makes a vital impression. All MEPs hold open surgeries – or you can contact them directly to book a meeting.

To help us co-ordinate the voice of the industry, please don't forget to send us a copy of your letter, too – and a copy of your MEPs' responses.

If you'd like any further advice or support, please contact us at the DMA here.
